How to Keep Your Car Cool in the Summer

2023 Mazda CX-50 Towing Capabilities

August is one of the hottest months in the L.A. area, as summer continues in full force. In fact, the heat can even continue well into the autumn months before it finally cools down a bit! If you’re hitting the Redondo Beach roads every day, you’re probably doing everything you can to stay cool inside the car. Keeping your car cool in hot weather is not only a personal comfort to you, but it also keeps your car safe from overheating and getting damaged. It’s just as important to keep your car cool while it’s parked, especially if you park it outside or in a place that doesn’t have air conditioning or good ventilation. In that spirit, the team at South Bay Mazda has put together a guide outlining five key things you can do to keep your car as cool and comfortable as possible in the summer and early autumn months.

Staying Cool in the Summer: 5 Key Tips

  • Stay out of the sun. This may sound obvious, but when you’re parking your car in Manhattan Beach, try your best to find a spot that’s well in the shade. Look for parking garages if possible (avoiding the rooftop), lots of tree cover, or tall buildings that cast a long shadow. You can double up on shade protection by investing in a windshield visor to shield the interior of your car while you’re away.
  • Cover up the interior. In addition to stretching a visor across the windshield to protect your car’s interior from overheating, you can cover up your seats with blankets or seat covers, toss a small towel over your steering wheel so you don’t burn your hands when you get back into your car, and cover the dashboard to protect the leather or vinyl from overheating and cracking.
  • Keep the air moving. The longer your car sits parked and unmoving, the more it heats up. This is because there’s no air moving inside. You can solve this problem by keeping your windows slightly cracked (not too much), activating the AC remotely before you get inside (if your car has this feature), or investing in a solar-powered fan to keep the air circulating while you’re away.
  • Keep your belongings out of sight. Direct sunlight can heat up and damage your personal items, whether they’re particularly sensitive to heat or not. Consider keeping them in the trunk, putting them underneath your seats, or tossing a blanket over them before leaving your car.
  • Monitor your AC. During the hot summer months, your AC becomes one of the most important systems in your car! If you’re driving and you notice the AC doesn’t seem to be as cold as usual, you might be running low on refrigerant. Fortunately, this is an easy fix — contact the service team at South Bay Mazda and we’ll take care of everything!
