How to Make Your Tires Last Longer

Tires can be really expensive, especially if you’re driving an SUV, truck, or something sporty. That said, Redondo Beach drivers can drastically reduce the cost of tire replacement by following a few tips to ensure long life for your tires. Read on, and then if you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to our tire center, or explore the many tire guides on our site covering topics like tire sizing.

What Causes Tire Tread Wear?

Before you read about how to achieve a long life for your tires. Manhattan Beach drivers should inspect their tires using these metrics to see if they’re already due for replacements or not:

  • Center Wear: Check the center sidewall of your tires for wear. If you see fraying in the rubber, you’ve probably been overinflating your tires.
  • Inner & Outer Tread Wear: If your tires are misaligned, expect “toe wear” or “camber wear.” Toe wear is wear to the part of your tire facing your undercarriage, and camber wear is sidewall wear facing away from your car.
  • Edge Wear: If the edges of your tire are beat up, you’ve probably been underinflating them.
  • Patchy Wear: If the tread wear on your tires is showing up in patches, they’re likely out of balance and it’s time to see a mechanic.

Tips for Getting Long-Lasting Tires

If you’re wondering about how to make your tires last longer, simply follow these rules of thumb:

  • Check Your Tire Pressure Monthly – Underinflation and overinflation, even by small degrees, can really beat up your tires. It’s easy to forget to monitor their PSI and most Long Beach drivers don’t know that tires can lose up to a pound per square inch of air pressure each month.
  • Rotate Your Tires Every 5,000 Miles – Your tires won’t wear evenly, which means that 1 or 2 of your tires is going to be working more than the other two. That’s only going to increase the rate at which they wear. When you rotate them, however, you avoid this problem.
  • Get Your Tires Balanced – After your tires are rotated, make sure to have them balanced. This helps to ensure that none of your tires are absorbing more weight than the others.
  • Check the Vehicle Alignment Twice Yearly – Have you hit a pothole or curb and experienced some drift in your steering? If so, your alignment is off and you’ll need to have your suspension adjusted. A warped suspension can rapidly wear out your tires.
